FDA Basics: Vasilios H. Frankos, PhD on Dietary Supplements

Vasilios Frankos is director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs at the Center for Food Safety. While there isnt a pre-market review of dietary supplements, says Frankos: "All dietary supplements that are marketed must be safe." The onus is on the manufacturer to ensure that dietary supplements are safe, but if FDA does identify a problem, through the literature or through adverse event reports, then "we can take action against those supplements and we have done that...." The FDA also monitors adulterants such as drugs or steroids that may find their way into the dietary supplement market.
