Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include

* Age - the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older
* Genes - there are two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested.
* Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55

Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or having dense breasts.

Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in size or shape of the breast or discharge from a nipple. Breast self-exam and mammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment may consist of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Men can have breast cancer, too, but the number of cases is small.

I HATE to be a "negative nellie", but the first thing that jumped out at me glaringly on this board is the picture of perfect breasts in a perfectly cute bra with the perfect amount of cleavage, and it ANNOYED me. A LOT.
I lost my breast 3 years ago & it just makes me think of how much harder the media & such seem to want to make it for women to deal with the fact that we are far from perfect, physically, to begin with. And not too many women have the looks presented on this board.
Now... on a forum with women that either have scars on their breasts or are LACKING breast/s, who's brilliant idea was it to put that picture on there?????
Has that person not seen Dove's ONSLAUGHT video?!
Does anyone else feel the same???
I'm not saying it all has to be gore & scars & such; but I just feel like that was a VERY BAD choice for a picture.

I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has surgery two weeks ago to remove the tumour and some lymph nodes. I am still waiting for some of the results from the pathology report, but did get good news that the lymph nodes were clear. I hope to meet with my oncologist soon to discuss my treatment options. I feel confident I can beat this and am remaining positive.
